Can't install OneNote Power Toys

P

Patty MacDuffie

Building a new machine and can't get these two power toys to install. I get
the message about cannot find the .msi file in the temp folder. I got this
before on my old machine and can't recall how I got it to install. I
downloaded both from Microsoft and ran them instead of saving them. No
error message on the IE powertoy, but it isn't there either. Any help?
Thanks.

Redownload and save to a location on your hard drive. Then launch from the
location you've saved them. Make sure your anti-virus software isn't
running, and you don't have OneNote open.

Hope it works for you, Patty. Most times it is something like a Norton
anti-virus sticking its nose in that causes this problem.

That didn't work, Chris. I'm using NOD32, and I disabled the background
protection during installation. I installed from hard disk. Does the path
have anythiing to do with it? I'm not putting it in its default path on the
C drive. However, when I search for the .msi file, it doesn't exist
anywhere. I don't know why it doesn't complete when you first install it.
Any idea what causes this issue, in terms of what it goes through on
installation? Or who I could contact to get a resolution on this? I simply
have to have these powertoys back, I use them all the time! Thanks.

The path shouldn't make any difference, Patty. I have mine installed to a
second partition (X:) under My Installed Programs. I would bet it is
still Norton interfering. Don't the PowerToys programs install from the
*.exe file for you?

Norton? What Norton? There's no Norton on this machine.

Yes, the installation runs from .exe files, and that's why I don't
understand why I'm seeing anything about .msi files at all. Do you have any
idea who I can contact to help me solve this, Chris? I gotta get these
working, thanks.

I don't understand why you're looking for an MSI file, Patty. I installed
from the EXE without problems.

Chris, I am not looking for an msi file, the installation is refusing to
complete because IT is looking for an msi file that it cannot find. And it
cannot find it because it does not exist. But without it, the installation
will not finish.

C

Chris H.

On your Office installation, did you do a full install to the hard drive?
You've searched the hard drive and have no MSI file at all? It probably
isn't locating it, and even though I installed to my X: partition, I have a
ONOTE11N.msi file in the C:\OneNote2003.temp directory. Remember, PowerToys
are not supported by Microsoft.

Patty, if you've originally installed Office via a server, this information
may be helpful for you:
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/office/2003/all/reskit/en-us/oe_depd02.mspx
Also, do you have .NET installed? This may assist you, too:
1.. Uninstall the PowerToy if you have already installed it
2.. From the Start menu, select Control Panel, and click Add/Remove
programs.
3.. Select Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003, and then select
Change.
4.. Select Add or Remove Features and click Next.
5.. Click Chose advanced customization of applications.
6.. Expand Microsoft Office Outlook, and confirm .NET Programmability
Support is set to Run from My Computer.

Hi Chris,

I think you're onto something here. For one thing, I didn't install it on
the C drive, but your path gives me a place to look next time. And the .NET
programmability might also be something. I don't think I did a complete
install this time, I may have done a typical install.

Slaving over a client's machine right now, so probably won't have a chance
to test all this out till tomorrow, Chris, but I thank you very much and
I'll let you know! :)

Good for you, Patty. (On the slaving . . .) I'm sure the PowerToys will
install. If I can install them, anyone should be able to do so, with the
right parts in place.

Patty, Chris and everyone else in this thread,

I posted this under Patty's new post (OneNote Powertoys will not install)
but post it here as well in case some of you miss it...
I hope the following should sort out this wonky install...

Tell the windows installer service to install the package from scratch,
ignoring anything that may already be on the system.
This can be achieved by following the following steps...
Put the exe in c:\temp (for example) and extract the msi by running...
C:\temp\IE2OneNote.exe /T:C:\temp /C
during the extraction process, answer yes to the license dialog.
now run the following line...
msiexec /I C:\temp\IE2OneNoteSetup.msi REINSTALL=ALL REINSTALLMODE=vomus

Regards,
Tim Owers.

Hopefully that will work for her, Tim. Thanks for posting. However, the
method should not be required. The installation should work as it has for
others, just a straight forward install. I suspect some item is missing,
such as the .NET components.

OK, Chris. Well I installed the necessary components for Office, ran it
again, got the same error message. Searched my entire hard drive for all
msi files. Found a whole bunch of them but none for the power toy. It went
through the same rollback routine it had done before. I tried the powertoy
from IE and it didn't appear to be installed either, though I got no error
message. I went through all my security options for IE thinking that could
be the issue. Took another look and remembered that the IE powertoy has no
icon in IE. My IE had been set by default to place selected text on right,
which isn't my normal setting. I did see a space on the toolbar, hovered
over it, and sure enough the Send to OneNote tooltip popped up. I changed
my toolbar to Show Text Labels and the Send to OneNote label appeared! So
far so good. I went into Outlook to check mail, and the Send to OneNote
button was there! Hallelujah! :) Thank you! Don't know why it still
insisted it couldn't install it, but I remember that from last time on the
old machine. Said it couldn't find the msi file, rolled back the install,
but then it was there anyway.

In any case, I've got them both installed now. Thank you very much!

Hello Tim,

Well I didn't see this until I already had success installing them, but I am
saving this in case I should need it installing it on a client machine. See
my note to Chris. I do think it is terribly odd that the msi file simply
did and does not exist on my machine! Wonky is the right word! There must
be something flawed in the setup code for this. I'm happy though, since I
have them back. :) Thank you, Tim!

Chris,
Only Powertoy that works for me is the Imagewriter and
PP2One. Tried uninstall and reinstall several times.
Guess I'm suffering from the issue you have described.
Problem is that when I try to follow your procedure, I
find that I do not have the Change option for the Office
pack when I access the Control Panel. Need to confess
that our company has a global desktop (standard program
suite) without OneNote which I have installed on my own
(and love the program!). Assume that our IT guys have
disable the Change option so that we should not be able
to tamper with the installation. I have also tried the
procedures suggested by Tim without success.

The funny thing is I managed to have Webpage2OneNote send
a web page to OneNote only once, but have not been able
to reproduce.

Any solution you experts can think of?

thanks,

Ole

Very good, Patty. When I first installed the PowerToy for Outlook, it
didn't appear either under after I had rebooted the system. I guess it
needs to put some claws into the Office package to work.

I'm not sure I understand what you're seeing, but if your IT department has
Office locked down you are going to need to talk with them.
