Can't open doc

I'm using Mac OS 10.3.7 with Word X for Mac. It won't open a Word document
directly. If I open Word first and then choose Open from the file menu, it
works fine. What am I doing wrong? Thanks very much.

Select the doc in the finder. Get Info. Turn down the "Open With"
triangle. Does it say "Microsoft Word (default)"
If no, the answer is obvious.
If yes, then ask again. Do any .docs open directly? What happens if you
open this one from in Word, save all but the last paragraph mark as a
different Word doc?
