can't open document

I have Xp and a new laptop with plenty of disc space. I
am trying to open a document that noone else seems to
have a problem with. I get the error message, "The
document name or path is not valid. Try these
suggestions. Check the file permissions for the document
or drive. Use the File Open dialog box to locate the
document."
This document is not password protected. People on a
research team have been sending it back and forth -
editing it but I am the only one unable to open it. It
has numberous graphs (Excell files). I tried to open
using the Dialog box with no results. If I open with
Word Pad I get mostly hierogliphics. Need help. Thanks

Are you opening it through Word's File Open dialog or from Windows Explorer?

Hi Suzanne,
Not sure I understand. If I left click on that file
(saved in My Documents) I get that error message. If I
go up to File and try to save in Word, I also get that
error message and if I right click on the document and
try to dave in Word I also get that error message. I've
tried also to save it in Internet Explorer but same
problem. Is that what you mean? Thanks for your help.

Start Word first. Go to File | Open and navigate to the file, then
double-click on it. Does it open?
