Can't open earlier office files with word 2003

Can't open earlier office files with word 2003. The
message pops up saying the file is unavailible. Does
anyone know how to fix this. Also when I save a new
document I can't re-open it because it says its not
availible. Also a problem saving because it alsways goes
to save to template.
