can't open file

V

vijay j.

I created an excel workbook with some mathematical formulas in Excel
2000, Windows XP.

I used only one sheet, the top two rows contained some text, and the
next row contained formulas which were dragged down to produce data.

The topmost row containing text had some merged cells, and a border
drawn around each resulting cell.

I saved the file, but when I tried to open the file after a few days,
it doesn't open. When I double click the file, excel opens, as if it
does while opening a normal file, but then nothing happens and I get a
blank excel screen (i.e. the same screen which can be obtained by :
opening excel, and then closing the default open file named Book 1.)
Any suggestions? It contains some important data. I tried opening the
file in MSword, which it does (with some formatting problems), I tried
copying data from word to a new file in excel, it does, but all
formulas are lost.

Thanks in advance
Vijay

Hi
not sure this will help but try the following:
goto 'Tools-Options-General " and uncheck "Ignore other Applications"
Exit Excel and try again

If this doesn't work try to re-register Excel

1. Close Excel first and
2. On the Windows Taskbar
2.1 Start>Run "excel.exe /unregserver"(no quotes)>OK.
2.2 Start>Run "excel.exe /regserver"(no quotes)>OK.

Hi Vijay

Could it be that the file opens as usual but it is moved so far up, down, left or right that you can't see it anymore
Excel doesn't show scrollbars in case of this. An indicator would be that the icons are not greyed out in the icon bars. Which they are (at least most of them) when no file is open

A solution would be create a new file by using the icon or File-New and maximise it, then you should be able to switch to it
