Can't open files

I've been unable to open several Word files on our network
that, I think, were originally based on the same document.
Word just stops responding.

They are all stored in completely different locations, and
I've tried opening them on different PCs and using Word 97
and 2002.

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening and how I
can overcome it please.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Hi, Rob E. What happens if you use Windows Explorer to copy the files from the network to a local drive, then try to open them from the local drive?
