Can't open older pub files in pub2003

Am running Publisher 2003 on Windows 2000 machine. Just recently, I lost the
ability to open older publisher files (mostly from Pub98). I am not running
Norton anything but have been using TrendMicro for anti-virus. Tried turning
it off and tried turning off the script virus protection to no avail on
either count.

Has there been a recent update that might have caused this problem? Or is
there something else I need to look at?

I think there has been a security update that changed some things. An earlier
poster is reporting having problems opening 98 files. I can't open files in my
installed 98 Publisher on this Vista, but I can drag and drop. Try dragging the
98 file to 2003.

Sorry to report that this did not work for me. Still get the message that
Publisher cannot open this file. Can the security update be identified or
Microsoft, can you fix this please right away? This is pretty unacceptable
behavior for a program like this. Makes one awfully leary (sp?) of updating
to newer versions of your programs.

I tried saving a new file today in 98 format within 2003 which it did so
well that I now cannot open the file in 2003. Luckily, it was just a test,
ubt telling of this problem.

Dear Ms. Sauer,

I just realized that I had mis-remembered the edition of my earlier
Publisher program. It is 97 rather than 98? I didn't realize this until I
went to look for the ealier program to re-install it as suggested in some
other posts. Also, noticed that whereas 2003 has the option to save in 98
format, it does not ofer the same for 97. Does this mean that 97 based files
are no longer compatible with 2003? If so, this is still mystifying because I
have been opening them for quite some time in 2003.

Thanks,
Slip

Hello Slipperyrock,

I can open 97 files fine in 2003 and 2007. I changed the compatibility to
Windows XP and the files still opened. It could be the WordArt, but that would
be only a guess. There is a WordArt compatibility utility you could try. You use
it in newer versions of Publisher by the insert menu, object.

Download details Publisher 2003-2002 Add-in WordArt Compatibility

It might help to turn off the pictures detailed display when you try to open a
97 file.
Give it a go in safe mode. Have you changed printers since you created the 97
files? Do you still have the driver software?
