Can't Open or Save As

go to control panel/users and password and make sure
you're on the computer as a user, pref an administrator

Ctrl-O (double-clicking on a file works OK, though). And
once it's started can't Save As (can Save, though). Tried
Norton's Office Plugin enabled and disabled, no
difference. Deleted (actually, renamed) old normal.dot,
this worked for a few opens and saves but then the same
problem. Updated a/v software, scanned entire drive,
found nothing. This started a couple of weeks ago after a
couple of years of trouble-free use. Any ideas welcomed.

I am the administrator. What happens is that a dialog box starts to
form, never quite does, Word hangs and then closes with an offer to
alert Microsoft to the problem.
