Cant open SharePoint Lists

When trying to edit a SharePoint list in Excel, the program hasks if i would
like to open the file and then freezes for a considerable time until it
throws an error: "An unexpected error occured. Your data was not saved"

Window XP SP2 clients with up to date office 2003 and WWS 2.0 on SBS2003
with SP1
