Can't Open Word 97 with XP

J

Jim

Just upgraded to XP and new CPU. Reinstalled Office 97
Pro. When trying to open word I get: "Microsoft Word
for Windows 97 application file has encontered a problem
and need to close."

No details on problem. Have send\t error message,
standard respond is install updates. Have done so,
problem remains. Other applications open OK.

Any ideas?

We don't ever advise *deleting* Normal.dot, as this could result in losing
years of customizations. Even renaming Normal.dot is not always called for,
as the problem could be caused by an add-in or a damaged Registry key.

Suzanne, I tried your suggestions, specifically walking through your directions at http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm. I renamed "normal.dot" to "normal.old" but no new "normal.dot" was created. Is it supposed to recreate? Also, renaming did not solve my "application has encountered a problem" issue. Thanks.

Renaming Normal.dot is just one of several troubleshooting steps outlined in
that article. A new Normal.dot is not created until you customize it.

Hi Suzanne...
At my work place we use a various operating system and software. This
include from Win3.1 to WinXP and Office95 to Office2003.
What I know is, on our new pc that come with WindowsXP we can't use Office97
because it has several problem occur. Yes it can install, and some can run
(at first) but always have problem :( . So, we already tested some of Office
version on XP, and what we know right now is WinXP required a minimum
Office2000. It's more stable to use but more better if use Office XP (2k2 or
2k3).

I have Word 97 installed on Windows XP and use it all of the time.

Office 97 had several problems regardless of the operating system.
Did you apply all of the patches for Office 97 after it was
installed?.
