can't open word docs/problems saving new docs

Two problems:

- If I click on a Word doc in My Documents or on the
desktop, I get an error message "the file xyz is not
available."

- I can create documents, but when I try to save them I
get the error message "The file Normal already exists. Do
you want to replace the existing file?"

I saw that someone else (Matthew) had a similar problem,
but the fix suggested didn't work for me.

Hope someone can help me - I'm really stuck not being
able to open or save documents!

Thanks in advance for any help, suggestions or fixes.

Does the "xyz" file say anything concerning Read Only?

Concerning Normal already exist - Go to Tools > Options > Save > Uncheck
"Prompt to save Normal template".

Hmmm, that box wasn't checked about the 'normal'
template.

Also, it doesn't say anything about a 'read only' file
when I try to open a document.

It's puzzling!
