Can't publish to local HDD any more

Jeff

Suddenly I can't publish my site locally. I have been
publishing to my local HDD as a backup each month without
any problems... This month, it crashes and says I should
check the logs on the web server. I have no idea what to
look at or look for.

The only thing I know of that has changed this month is
that I added a form on one of the pages. Does this
require some special way of publishing to a local
directory?

No, adding a forms page to your site wouldn't have this
effect. Try the remedies prescribed at:

None of this worked... It seems like it got farther along
before it bombed - this is after I removed and
reinstalled the FP server extensions at my hosting
provider.

I have noticed that there is a _vti_cnf folder in pretty
much every folder on the site. I don't see this in FP,
but I see it in ws_ftp - the _vti_cnf folder appears to
hold a copy of everything in the folder.... I have not
noticed this before....

Any ideas?

This is normal. If you have a file named
whatever.htm
then
_vti_cnt/whatever.htm
contains whatever information FrontPage needs to maintain about
that file.

You're best off not poking around your site using an FTP program.
Looking is OK, but fixing via that route is doomed to failure.

How large is this Web site? For example, how many files does it
contain, and how many magabytes?

It is about 150Mb - not sure of a file count. It is just
a family site, so it isn't like a client or anything, but
I would hate to lose all of it if something happened to
the server.

Plus - I am just curious why it quit working when it has
worked for over a year and nothing changed (that I am
aware of).

Since it is getting hard to find this post as it gets
buried, can you just e-mail me direct at
[email protected]? Pls include Front Page Help in the
subject or I will probably delete it out of habit...

Thanks

Since you have had a failed publish do some clean up
1) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all FP Temp Files
Usually in you IE Temp folder, C:\WINDOWS\Temp and
C:\Documents and Settings\<USER>\Local Settings\Temp
2) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all hidden *.web files
Usually in C:\Documents and Settings\<USER>\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Server Extensions\Cache

Then open you online web in FP and run a Tools Recalculate Hyperlinks before you attempt to publish

PS
The size of your site (150MB) may continue to cause you problems (server errors or timeouts)
If your host supports subwebs, you may want to convert some of the folders to subwebs based on content grouping (see FP Help on
subwebs)
Then you can publish the root web (and each subweb) independently

That's a very large Web, and the size of it is probably the root
of your problems. You really need to segregate content into
several discrete folders, and then make each one a subweb.

For more info, consult the article at:

Connection Times Out During Publish
http://www.interlacken.com/winnt/tips/tipshow.aspx?tip=1

even if this isn't the specific message you're getting.

As to why this problem first appeared now, perhaps you site has
grown a little large; perhaps the hosted server has grown a
little busier; perhaps your network connection is getting busier.
Over time, these and other factors inevitably vary.
