Associate sent me a word doc with embedded picture and equation. The object boxes are drawn but the content appears to be empty. Sender claims to have created these objects in Word 2000

On the inserted picture object, selecting edit picture gives an apparently empty box

On the inserted equation, selecting open or edit works and I can see the content, but closing does not make the equasion readable

Can't find a relevant issue in technet or MS Word support

Similar behavior on XP Pro, OfficeSP, word 200

Any ideas
