Cut-and-paste picture inserts a "package" instead of a picture.

Hi all,

I have a strange problem in word 2000, Win XP SP2:

Inserting pictures with Insert->picture->From file... works fine.

Earlier I have also been able to insert pictures with cut-and-paste directly
from Explorer into word, but now it inserts a "package" with the picture name
at the bottom. The package is blank, and if I rigth-click and selects
Package-object->Activate contents it opens up "Windows picture and fax..:"
with the correct picture.

I dont have this problem on a Win XP SP2, Word 2003 machine...

Sems like someone has been messing up some settings, but what?

Solution anyone?

some software has apparently associated one (or more) graphics extensions (such
as bmp, tif, etc.) with this other application. Try this:

1. Open a Windows Explorer window

2. Tools/Folder Options/File Types

3. Locate a graphics file extension (such as bmp)

4. Click "Change"

5. Associate the file type with a graphics program, such as Windows Paint (or
something else you may have installed, such as Paint Shop Pro)

Now see if this file type copies into Word the way you expect. If it does,
repeat the steps for other graphics extensions you want to use in Word.

Not quite, I'm afraid...

The associated program was "windows picture and fax wiever", as expected.
Changing to paint did not solve the problem, activating the object would
lead to paint opening up instead of picture and fax wiever.

PS: Forgot to mention that it's JPG-files I'm trying to paste into word.

To make it clear, the rigt-click menu I'm getting on the inserted "picture"
is not the same as on the correctly inserted picture. It seems like word
doesn't recognize my "paste" as a picture, but an object.

Thanx again,

Otto

If you start Word in Safe Mode, then insert a JPG, does the behavior persist?

In order to start Word 2000 in Safe Mode: START/Run. Type in: winword.exe /a
Press ENTER. Word will load with the installation defaults, and any Addins
will be locked out. In this way, we can determine whether the behavior is
internal to Word.

Also try booting Windows in Safe Mode and test again.

This behavior is NOT normal for Word, but would be for an embedded OLE Object.
For some reason, Word is seeing JPG as embedded OLE objects (as if they'd been
inserted via Insert/Object/From File) and it's not using its internal graphics
converters. Most likely, something on your system has written jpg to the
Registry as an OLE object, or perhaps the graphics file converter has been
lost.

Since Insert/Graphic/From file still works correctly, I'm thinking it's
something that's been written to the Registry (perhaps/probably through the
fax software you mention). You might also try removing that and see whether it
makes a difference.
