can't rename picture in picture manager

hello everyone
Office Picture Manager will not allow me to rename my pictures.
i always get a warning dialogue box saying that to rename it might make the
file unstable. if i continue anyway it changes the icon, indicating a
different file format, and makes the file unopenable. i try to rename by
right click - rename picture or when picture is fully opened - edit - rename.
nothing works.
Please help - i need to put my pictures on cd roms with appropriate titles.
thank you
heather

Control panel, Folder Options folder, view tab, clear "Hide extensions for known
file types." When you change the name of your image, don't change the extension;
this is the reason for your dialogue warning. If you cannot view the extension
and change the name you are also eliminating the extension.

thank you mary
i did as you suggested and the "Hide extensions for known
file types." was not checked in the tick-box for me to clear it.
I am not sure what you mean by 'extension'.
Any other reason why this might be happening?
thanks
heather.

For example:
If you are changing the name for "Picture1.jpg" to "Picture2.jpg", the
extension is the .jpg or .gif or whatever type of picture file it is. You
need to make sure that the extension is there. If you take that away, it
could still work but you will need to tell it what program to open the file
with.

cd roms.
