Can't return & insert new footnote number 3 when 1-5 already in pl

A new reason came up to add another footnote between already existing
footnotes number 3 and 4. I hoped the insertion would automatically appear
as number 4 and the ones after it would automatically get a new numeric value
one higher than before. Instead (And I've carefully chosen options from
every pop-open menu that applies) the new footnote receives number 1 and the
previously set footnote texts displayed on the bottom of the screen
disappear. (I can still read the text content of each footnote on a pop-out
display field by putting my cursor over it.)

Then your existing footnotes must not be regular Word footnotes. The
options you chose should involve AutoNumber, by the way--Word usually takes
care of this by default.

Are you sure the other notes are not endnotes? That's what it sounds most
like. Sounds like you are using Normal View--usually an excellent idea--but
check Page Layout to see if the others show up as endnotes, or look at the
top of the Footnote Pane in Normal View to see what it says.

Was the doc originally created in Word?
