Can't save or open files in word office xp

Confused

Things have worked fine for years, then for no apparent reason I can't save
files or open files in Word. I 've been using Office XP Pro. The computer
just locks up. Everything else works fine. I can open files with Explorer but
not with Word? Ant suggestions?

Windows Update KB908531 has been reported as the culprit causing the
problems. Those who remove it find it clears up the problem. Of course,
with automatic update enabled, it will continue downloading.

I'am having the same problem as Tom but with Office 2003. It is the same file
the culprit?
