Can't save to name of OPEN file...?

K

Kenneth

Howdy,

Several times in sequence I got a FP error that confuses me...

I modified a page, and then used Save As to use that page as a
replacement for another, that is, to save the modified page using the
name of a different page that already exited.

The error tells me that I cannot save to a name of a page that is
already open.

The first few times that I got the error, I just assumed that I had
neglected to close the former page. But, when I checked, I discovered
that the page with the name that I wanted to use was not open at all
though FP "thought" that it was.

This is a modest inconvenience, but I would like to eliminate the
problem.

Thanks for any help,

Assuming that you are asking me a question, yes, sorry, this is in
FP03.

I was. I have noticed a similar problem in my fp 2003 and from what I've
seen others say is that it's known about but no immediate fix.

Hi Chris,

Very sincere thanks. With the information you offered, I will shift
from "problem solving mode" to "prayer mode."<g>

All the best,

In the meantime, you could first delete the original file with the name.

Hi Wally,

Yes, thanks...

I knew that and described the problem as an inconvenience that had me
perplexed.

All the best,

That makes me feel really weird about responding to this post....I'm good,
but I'm no diety.

I believe what you are seeing is a known issue with the clipboard. This is
a stab in the dark, because I don't have your full repro steps, but if you
copied something from the open page to the clipboard (CTRL + C, or EDIT >
COPY), then closed the page, then opened the new page and tried to SAVE AS
over the page from which you copied text, you will get this error.

You need to clear the clipboard.

Hi John,

My OP had nothing at all to do with the Clipboard...

All the best,

I don't remember the exact conditions that brought the problem on. I'll be
sure to remember this next time and try the clipboard.
what is the process for clearing the clip board. I don't think I've ever
done it. just copy and paste.

Got it.
If I have the website set for "sharing" in windows explorer I get the "can't
save file...." message. If I clear the "share my ...." it's back to OK.
I haven't been doing anything but .asp files so I don't know about other
extensions.

I'm hoping to save the one John posts back. ;-) cause it doesn't do that on
fp 2002.

Hi Chris,

I think the easiest way to clear the clipboard (without changing any of your
preferences or anything) is to do the following:

CTRL + C + C (hitting the C twice launches the Clipboard taskpane)
Click "Clear All"

Alternatively, you can select individual copies and delete just them.
Notice that using this clipboard allows you to easily select a bunch of
stuff from one page and paste it selectively onto a new page. I am just
getting the hang of it, but find myself using it quite a bit now.

I've found some of the "background" stuff such as new code features and the
enhanced clipboard to be very interesting.
I've started a list of things I find "odd" and would definitely like to
change on my own or perhaps ms would want to change it. Is there an address
to send the list/ notes to? It doesn't seem appropriate to just dump it on
the board.

You could send it to http://register.microsoft.com/mswish/suggestion.asp
But IMHO posting it here may get more attention
