can't turn off same as previous for page numbering

I have Word for Mac 2011. When I insert a header or footer it bring
up a blue bar and it says "same as previous". There seems to be no wa
to turn this off. I can't go into the header/footer bar as I could o
my old Windows version. I don't know how to insert page numbers afte
the table of contents so that the page numbers won't appear on th
previous pages. Everything I've been told to do doesn't work. Ther
is some place - well hidden - where this can be accessed, but I don'
know where

When your cursor is in the header or footer, a new tab appears on the
ribbon, where you will find the controls for disconnecting from
previous sections, for inserting page nos., etc. (Double-click in the
header area to enter it; to return to the text, double-click in the
text. This of course is when you are in Print View, not Draft View.)
