Caption error Word 2002

Hi
i'm working on a german version of Word 2002
I've been working on a long document with lots of tables and figures
and have created.
a caption 'Table' and 'Fig.' for labeling and cross referencing. Now at
one point suddenly all the 'Fig.' lables got turned into 'Table' labels
both in the captions and the cross references. Needless to say that i'm
not to amused...+ this is the second time it has happened.
Does anyone know how to prevent this from happening againg or better
yet reverse it (doubt this will work of course) ??
On a minor issue, any caption with automatic numbering in chapter ten
will turn out wrong, i.e.
what should be '10-5' will be '0-5'.

Any sugestions hints or even an explanation to get some closure on this
greatly appreciated.
Thanks AL

Are you using Word's captions (labels and SEQ numbering) or have you set up
your own styles using autonumbering (Numbering format on a paragraph style)?
If the latter, my guess would be that you have based one of the styles on
the other and have not managed to set up the Numbering correctly - maybe you
are getting an automatic update either from the style when you apply direct
formatting, or from the template.

If you are using custom labels, the problem might relate to the fact that
custom labels are stored in your own normal.dot, and not in the document.

On Chapter 10, it could be that you have got the automatic numbering set up
to start at 0, with a literal 1 (or maybe even a placeholder "1" from
another level) in front of it. All will apparently look OK in the heading
itself, but references that pick up the autonumber only would then just see
the 0 - sounds weird, but I have seen this happen when people get into a
muddle with all the placeholder "1"s in the autonumbering dialog. You might
try changing the number format to A,B,C and see what happens then.
Otherwise, if the autonumbering is OK, look to see if you are somehow
clipping the space available to display/print a two digit number.

Sorry, no solutions here, but maybe some ideas of where to look to narrow
down the problem.
