Caption vs Description in photogallery

I have never been totally clear on (aside from placement) what the
difference is between a caption and a description in a photogallery.
They seem functionally interchangable. Are there any real differences
other than captions will appear before descriptions?

Can anyone give me an example of how the two would be used together to
complelemnt one another?

TIA

I don't see there is any difference.

A caption is a description of what is in a photograph (in that context of the
word anyway).

e.g. a caption of a photo of the US President shaking hands with John Kerry would
be

"President G W Bush meets with his rival John Kerry"

for example so they are really one and the same.
