Capture a new Field for some project types

We have a requirement to capture additional information when users are
entering timesheet on a maintance/support project. For example, our
accounting department wants us to capture the ticket number on all
production issues. Is there a way to trigger a pop up field requesting
this information on my custom field -project type - production?

The functionality you describe requires some custom coding, but it can be
done.
