carriage returns from vb not working inside a cell in a table in word 2002

We have an automation process that uses a vb created
address list to populate cells in a table in a form
letter. If you view the end result documents in word 97,
the addresses appear correctly reading the carriage return
after each line of the address. If you view this document
in word 2002, instead of reading the carriage return
correctly, it puts in a box (looks like a check box)
between the text of the lines of address. If you copy
this text and paste into a regular word document (or
outside the table in the same document), the address comes
in correctly. The address also looks correct in the
clipboard pane. Is there a setting in word 2002 that
determines how these carriage returns are interpreted in
tables? What changed from word 97 to word 2002 in regards
to tables?
