Category will not Delete / Category changes when email moves to Trashfolder

Allen

My email is imap. Deleted emails are directed to the Trash folder.
All in coming emails are received with the Category of “None” (no
Rules). Recently when emails are Deleted from the In Box and
transferred into the Trash folder Entourage changes those emails to
the Category named eBay (one of my Categories) from None. If the
destination folder is redefined, the problem goes away. The odd thing
is when I go to Edit / Category / Edit Categories the Category named
eBay can be edited or duplicated, but not Deleted. (Button does not
activate) All other Categories act normal.

Because of the problem I upgraded Office from 12.2.1 but no change.
Running OS 10.5.8 with Office 12.2.3. Entourage DB is 1.7 gigs on a
MacBook. The hard drive has 14% available storage. DB does not appear
to be corrupted. It has been compacted twice without errors.

My question is, does this appear to be an application or DB issue?
Could I have a corrupted plist file? Is it indicated that a new
Identity should be made?

Any thoughts would be appreciated. I can live with it the way it is,
but my concern is there may be a greater issue going that has not
surfaced.

Thank you…Allen

You must have a rule that is moving the message. The most likely culprit is
the Mailing List Manager (MLM). It's very easy to set up a MLM rule by
accident, when you are marking a message as 'not junk'. The wording of that
dialog is ambiguous to say the least. Check if there is an MLM entry (look
for MLM entries under the tools menu) with the incorrect destination folder
as the target folder. Mailing List Manager rules run before your other
rules.

I bet you'll find that it's also setting the category ebay to the emails.

Thank you for the tip Diane. Checked Mailing List Manager and there
are no rules listed. It does not seem to matter in which imap folder
or what the category is, if an email is moved to the Trash folder
(only that folder) its Category is eBay or eBay and XXX (if another
Category was assigned).

Is there a Entourage file, that I would have access to, that stores
the Categories, that I could edit out the eBay? Would you think that
i may have other problems that have not surfaced? Again, the Category
eBay acts normal in every way, except it will not let me delete it -
my guess is something is corrupt. Wonder if I should create an imap
Delete folder, Transfer all records in the Trash folder to it and then
delete the current Trash folder - what do you think?

Thanks again for you help. Allen Smith

Only a rule can move a message. Is it possible you have a rule set up on the
server side? When you checked your Rules, did you look under the IMAP tab?

You can edit categories. Select Categories icon and Edit Categories.

Sorry I have not made myself clear. The emails are not automatically
being moved to Trash, I am sending the emails to the Trash manually.
(that is working fine). The problem is when new emails arrive in the
In Box the Category is None (as they should be). It is when the email
(s) are selected and moved to the Trash folder that the Category
changes from None to eBay.

And when I try to delete the Catagory eBay {Select Categories icon and
Edit Categories), when i select eBay for deletion the Delete button
goes dim. All other Categories in this Edit Categories window work
properly. Even the eBay Category works as it should, except for the
Delete option.

Thanks again Diane

Hi Diane,

I sent an email to you last week. Just checking if you have received
it. It came from allen@prog....

BTW - suddenly email stopped converting emails that i send to Trash to
eBay and they are not holding what ever there Category was in the
inBox. However, I still can not delete the Catagory eBay, so something
is still wrong with the db or the application. Thank you...Allen

I never received your email. I usually reply right away. Did you fix the
address before sending?

I just added your address to my Address Book so it shouldn't get lost in
