CD Drive

Hi there,
I am having problems with my CD drive. i'm not sure why
its behaving so weird. What happens is that the CD drive
automatically opens every minute or so and then it
automatically closes.
The light on the CD drive keeps flashing continuously as
if when a CD is inserted...then the drive opens (almost
every minute) and closes after a few (about 10 seconds).
Now if I insert a CD into the drive, it takes the CD in
and after a few seconds realises that there is a CD
inside and then the drive opens again; thereafter it
stops the opening and closing of the drive and just
remains open.
The light on the CD also stops flashing after that.
Now there is no CD drive among the default drives in
the 'My Computer' section of my computer. What I mean to
say is that when I open the 'my computer' part, there is
only the A:\drive that appears as an option that can be
chosen and there is no D:\drive in that section that
could be selected (as I used to do in the past)

The other weird thing is that this has happend in the
past once before and then the computer automatically
fixed it up itself and after a few days, the CD drive was
normal. (I thought that it may have been a booting error
or something like that and rebooted the system a number
of times and also have been waiting for a number of days
to see if the computer automatically fixes the problem,
but it just seems to keep on and on, without being fixed)

Your help in this matter would be very much appreciated
and thank you for the same in advance.
Cheers
Christine

No, I am not on a network and my PC is a private PC, with
no networking with other computers.
I tried to do what you've suggested but when I open the
Device Manager, I dont get any option as a CDRom. The
only options that i can see, in relation to the drives is
the Floppy Disk Drive and the Floppy Disk controller.
Thers's no mention of a CDRom.
Also I am working on a Windows XP system.
And as I mentioned before, the problem got fixed on its
own in the past, when a similar thing had happened, but
it doesnot seem to do it this time.
Hope this would shed some more light on the problem.
Cheers
Christine
