Not sure how to close this thread so I'll post an update here ...

I was able to determine the issue. Following my speculation that th
VBA code was the culprit. I started with a new sheet and steppe
through my code to see when the change occured ..
ActiveWindow.Formulas = True. This setting can also be found in Tools
Options > View. This explains why the condition remained even when
had re-opened the workbook with macros disabled.

Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately, few are likely to know what you're
talking about. This should be posted as a reply in your original thread.
This seems to be a problem with excelforum. Many posts are not properly
threaded, and sometimes I give up on them, unable to figure out who's saying
what to whom.
