Cell reference and dual screen

I have a dual screen video card (Nvidia Quatro), and I usually display
two instances of excel, one in each screen. For that to work, i have to
open SEPARATE excell workbooks (instead of opening different windows
from teh same excel instance), but then I loose the ability to
reference one book's cells from the other workbook, by clicking on them
(when I change workbooks, I loose the cell reference). Is there a way to
modify this behaviour?

I don't use multiple monitors, but I don't think so.

Any chance you could just open one of the workbooks in one session, then open it
readonly in the other.
