Cell selection problems

Hello all,

I have a user in my company that is having a strange problem with
Excel. He clicks on one cell to create a function, hits the = key and
then clicks the Cell he wants to include in that function. However,
instead of just grabbing that one cell, it grabs a few of them, all in
the same row, and all connected to the one he clicks in.

This did not happen 3 months ago, or even last month, but has been
starting to crop up in the last couple of weeks.

It also is not related to any one book/sheet/etc. from what he has
told me. It appears that this may happen in different places. I
haven't had much time to test this, but wanted to get a first hand
idea from anyone out there if this has been seen before or not. If
so, what was the fix? Is it a template issue maybe (though I don't
think he's using one)?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

I agree it sounds mouse related. If the mouse has a scroll wheel/button
combo, try clicking that once. That has resolved this same issue for me
in the past.

Unfortunately, I don't think it is mouse related. He has a laptop
with a touchpad, as well as the mouse. If we take the mouse off and
use the touchpad instead, we still run into the same issue.

He's had a couple of other strange things happen lately, too. However,
I want to look at these one at a time to see if we can find what the
cause may be.

Try selecting the cells without using the mouse instead use the arrow
keys. If this works it is not an Excel issue.

Ok, I have him trying that today, and we'll see what happens. However,
here's a little strangeness to throw into the mix:

When he clicks on one field, all of the others that are selected are
simply outlined with the standard thick black box, the contents do not
become shaded, as if you were selecting a range of cells using the
shift or control key.

He also had another weird thing just happen, where we went to open a
shortcut, and Excel simply hung for approximately 4 minutes. The file
is only a couple hundred K in size, not a huge file. If I go to start
run and type 'excel "D:\path\to\file name.xls" it opened right up.

Is his Excel installation possibly corrupt?
