Certain keys no longer behave as before

Some keys no longer perform as before, e.g. When I highlight text and press 'Delete' key the text is not deleted, but a 'Delete block? No (Yes) prompt appears at the foot of the screen. Does anybody know what has caused this and how to correct?

Oh thank you so much, i have just the same problem and ive been messing around for hours trying to sort it, soon as come here, bingo!! You lot are so smart. xx
