change colour of cell

hi, can anybody tell me how to change the fill colour of a cell depending
what is in it, say if BRIAN is entered the make red if GARY then blue

Use conditional formatting (Format>Conditional Formatting)

In the first condition, set it to equals with a value of BRIAN, set the
pattern to suit, add a condition, etc.

Hi Des,
With Conditional Formatting you have a limit of 3 conditions
per cell which means only 3 colors (or interior/font/borders
combinations) available per cell (not counting default).
