Change in duration

Hello,

I found in one of projects the duration has changed(increased). Can anyone
tell me in what situation it might be changed? I mean if any of the team
member has entered the timesheet beyond the planned date does it change ?

In total, what does change in the duration mean?

Thanks

Paul,

Thanks a lot for the link. Link was quite informative but I have the
following doubts:

1) The task is Fixed Unit and effort driven as mentioned below:

Task 1 -> 10 days (duration) , John ( Resource), Task type Fixed Duration
Effort driven and task usage is 5 hrs.

This meant I want John to work for 5 hrs during 10 days, its fixed duration
and Effort driven. Now in this scenario itself the duration has become 10.47
days. I didnt understand why? But the resource has updated the timesheet for
5 hrs only, and that too within the mentioned period.

Does it by any chance mean that he might have entered outside the specified
duration, due to which it might have increased and later he might have set
that to zero, and entered within the specified duration.

2) Similar behaviour has happened in another task where I have forgotten to
keep Effort driven ON.

Hope you can help me in understanding this.

Thanks

Quoting you "This meant I want John to work for 5 hrs during 10 days, its
fixed duration
and Effort driven."

Fixed duration and Effort driven are theoretically mutually exclusive.
Effort driven says that work is driving duration. The task is done when the
work is done, and not when the arbitrary duration is reached. Using them
together is silly.

To determine what caused the duration to change, you should open the project
in Project and apply the Task Usage view and zoom into the level necessary
to see where the work got posted. You may need to zoom to hours to see this.

Hello Gary,

Ohhooo! Then it should have been Fixed duration, and effort driven should be
unchecked in the example I quoted. Right?

I will also zoom and find out. Thanks a lot.

Thanks
