Change info in footers for different pages

I have a document that gets revised periodically so I need to be able to put
the revision date in the footer, but when I do that, it continues on all
pages. I only want the revision date to show on the page that was revised.
Is there anyway to do this without having to put section breaks before and
after each page? I've been just adding it to the bottom of the page but
depending on the version of word, it sometimes shows up on the top of the
following page.

You can't put it IN the header or footer, for the reasons you mention.

I'd say, put it in a frame or text box, and make sure this object is anchored
to a paragraph part way up the page, and not at the very end of the page.
Graphical objects are ALWAYS anchored to a paragraph. And when you edit text,
the page breaks may alter. So if a paragraph slips to another page, the graphic
goes along.
