change paragraph formatting for numbered outline style

I'm using the style "1/1.1/1.1" for a numbered outline. I would like to
set the paragraph formatting to have "12pt spacing before" for the
first level of the outline. However, when I go to Modify Style > Format
Paragraph, the Paragraph is grayed out and I can't change it.

I can go to each line and format the paragraph individually, but I
would like to do it at the style level so it is automatic for all
future lines.

Any clues on how to do this? I'm using Word 2002. Thanks!

Do the following to modify the paragraph in a numbered outline style:

Once you begin using the numbered outline, format the paragraph with "12 pt
Spacing Before", then select "Update to Match Selection" from the Styles and
Formatting menu.

This will apply to the entire style, but not just the first level of the
outline.
