Change Project owner

J

Jeff Phillips

I am interested in knowing the process of changing
ownership of a project.
There seems to be at least 3 steps in the process but I am
not sure.
1. Use Admin access to Project Web Access (PWA), select
Projects, edit/modify the project by selecting new owner.
2. Open the project plan off of the MS Project Server,
select Project, select Project Information, then choose
the new owner.
3. What about tasks that are awaiting approval? End-users
have updated their tasks with actual work hours and the
request for approval went to an employee no longer working
here. How do I transfer the approval requests to the new
project owner??

There are two fields which govern who can open a project and to whom actuals
are sent by team members. The Owner of the project is the person who first
created the project and saved it in the Project Server database. The Owner
field is a default field in the Summary view of the Project Center, and can
be used for filtering and grouping.

The Manager of the project is the person who initially publishes the
resource assignments in the project, and is the person to whom task updates
are directed in Project Web Access. This information can be seen on the
View My Tasks page by each team member assigned to tasks in a project.

To become the Owner of a project, the new manager should do the following:

1. Log into Project Web Access
2. Apply the Project Center page
3. Select their new project
4. Click the Edit Project Details button
5. Select the new Owner of the project
6. Click the Save and Close button

To become the Manager of the project, so that task updates will be
redirected to him/her, the new manager should do the following:

1. Open Microsoft Project and log into Project Server
2. Open the project in question
3. Click Collaborate - Publish - Republish Assignments
4. Select the "Become the manager of these assignments" option
5. Click the OK button

That's how to do it. I think you were confusing the terms "Owner" and
"Manager" and not understanding how each of these fields functions within
the system. Hope this helps.

The View My Tasks page is accessed in Project Web Access by clicking the
Tasks menu.

Thank you. That seems to have done the trick.

Are there any additional steps to receiving task approval
requests? I didn't see an instantaneous transfer of
pending task approval requests from the old employee's
queue to the new PMs email box. It came later in the day.
Do the task resources (people who actually do the work)
need to respond to the notification of the new PM in any
way via email to get the pending tasks sent to the new PM?
Or does the act of republishing the tasks and indicating
that you have "Become the manager of these assignments"
sufficient?

Thanks!
