Change the version of a project in server

Is there a way to change the version of a project in PS?

I have set up 3 additional project versions in the admin
and kept the publish version as well.

Published
Estimate
Complete
Canceled

Once we complete a project we would like to be able
to "switch" the version from "published" to "complete".

The only way I can see to do this is very time intensive:
1.) Save as project.complete
2.) Launch Project Web
3.) Admin : Clean up PS Database
4.) Delete Project.published

We've also noticed that the version is stored in the
database as plain text, would it kill something if we
wrote a web app to change the value at the database level?
