change the yellow folder symbol

I want to customize the appearance of the icon used to indicate a folder, so
that it will stand out in a long list of folders. I've tried "customize" in
the properties of the folder, but this only gives the option of a picture in
"Thumbnails" view.

Obtain or create an icon image file ( .ico extension) and apply that in the
customization.

It's really a Windows function, not Office.
