Changes in formatting

When I highlight a phrase, sentence or paragraph, then make a change such as type style or size, bolding, underlineing, it chnages every part of the document sometimes, and then others, just the section, and other times just the highlighted selection. Why, the differences? I always just want to change the highlighted selection only. If I want to change the style, I will chose Select similar styles from the right click pull down menu and then change or midify the style. Why does Word make the changes to other non-selected parts of the document?

In addition to the first problem, while working on Word, using text frames, doing a flow chart. When I make a format change in one box, the other 29 boxes also change AND duplicate the other text box contents in each box. I have to delete all of the duplications in EVRY darn box EVERY TIME I make a format change. WHYYYYYYYYYYY???????!!!!!
