changes in Normal.dot?

I was playing around in word(2000) with a test document,
experimenting with creating two-column document, section-
break and line numbering.
I then closed everything. Now whenever I start word and
open a new document, it always opens a document in two
column mode, with some strange section breaks and line
numbering. I don't know why. When I try to think back
what I did with the test document, I remember some
question regarding saving changes to Normal.dot being
asked by word before closing, and I don't remember what I
did to it. Is the problem related to this or otherwise?

Please help me out.
