changing background on DWT

If I change the background on a DWT, the change does not apply to the pages
to which that DWT is attached. Is this impossible to accomplish with DWT? How
about Themes? I've not tried that yet.

The DWT can only update pages in a Disk-based web or WSS web, no a FP extension based-web. Also in
the DWT is the background specified in a non-editable region, if not then it can't be updated by
changing the DWT.

A theme would require that you modify the theme, then save under a new name, remove the current
theme, and then apply the newly modified theme, then run Tools | Recalculate Hyperlink and then
finally republish the complete site.

I was logging in to my site on a server with FP extensions. So, publishing is
just a matter of saving. When I added the background I did have my cursor in
an editable region, but the change took place on the whole page of the .dwt

I had read somewhere in this discussion forum earlier today of the creation
of a "strip.dwt," just a blank dwt with an editable region which I called
Body. I attached "strip" to the pages, checked the pages and the action took
effect. Then I kept the pages selected and immediately re-attached the .dwt
with the background and the action made the change correctly.

I'm doing this experimenting on a small subweb. I can imagine that the
"strip" and replace procedure could become tedious on a large site. I had
assumed that making a change to the dwt attached to files--5 or 500--would
automatically update all the pages.

Am I understanding you to say that if I do all of my work on the local PC
and then publish to the web site that the dwt changes will work more
effectively?

The FP extensions do not support automatic updating of pages based on the DWT. You have to open each
page and then update the DWT. Auto updating is only supported on your local machine when using a
disk-based web or when working on Windows 2003 Server with Windows Sharepoint Services installed.

Yes ... however one should be doing that anyway .. don't forget to
recalculate hyperlinks under tools before publishing.
