changing currency

I've got a worksheet, created by someone in the USA. I'm in the UK, with
all my Microsoft Language settings set to UK English. When I apply the
currency button to a column in this particular worksheet, the dollar sign
appears.

However in a new spreadsheet that I create, the currency button adds a
british pound symbol as I would expect.

I'm guess that the worksheet from the USA is holding some US setting in it
somewhere, but I don't know where that might be?

Please could someone advise on how to change it to a British spreadsheet
please?
Am using Office Professional 2003.

Select the column with pounds and use
format>cells>currency
