Does anyone know how to change the view in the Update tab on PWA. I tried
chaning the time sheet view, but that didn't work.

Assuming you are referring to Project Server 2003, there is no way to change
the layout of the Updates page in PWA. If you add custom columns to the
Timesheet view and position them in the order you want team members to see
them, this does not translate over to the Updates page. Instead, the custom
columns appear on the far right end of the table of columns. Even if the PM
moves the custom columns into a new position, after he/she processes all
updates, the custom columns go back to the far right end the next time there
are new updates. Very frustrating, but that's how it works. Hope this
helps.

The problem is I did add it to the task view and I am not seeing it in the
update view anywhere. I can see it in the timesheet view though

In addition to adding the custom field to the Timesheet view in PWA, did you
also add this field to the list of Published fields in EVERY enterprise
project (and make the field editable) and then have the PM republish the
assignments for EVERY project using Collaborate - Publish - Republish
Assignments? After doing this, when a team member submits an update and
enters data in that field in their PWA timesheet, the field will show up on
the Updates page at the far right end of the list of columns. Let us know.
