Changing keystroke for random characters?

David Winter

Hi all,

Have googled through the group and couldn't find an answer to my
question.

I am studying Maori at university and need to use special characters
in my assignments, at the moment to use one of those characters i need
to type something like alt-0228 to get to those. Is there a way I can
change the thing I have to type to get those characters. (win98SE,
Word98.)

Thanks in advanve

(I'm assuming you meant Word97?)

If you only need to use the special characters in Word, you can assign
them to keyboard shortcuts. I'm not sure where this option is in Word
97; in 2000, there's a button on the Insert Symbol dialog. To avoid
confusion later, make sure it says the key combination is currently
unassigned before assigning it to anything. Note that you can't use
this method to set new Alt+Num shortcuts; you can use Alt, but only
with keys on the normal keyboard, not the numeric keypad.

Another option, which would be available system-wide (not just Word)
is to install a keyboard layout that contains the characters you need.
I don't know if there is one for Maori specifically, but you may be
able to find one that isn't Maori but still contains the characters
you need. Your teacher may be able to help with this. Unfortunately, I
don't have Windows 98 handy, so I have only vague recollections that
you need look in the control panel under Keyboard.
