Changing Linked Data Source Nightmare

Does any one out there know why it is that when a linked data source is changed using the "Edit" sub-menu "Links", to navigate to the new data source. More often than not a target range of cells other than the one selected or desired gets linked to the new data source. When this happens I have to close and re-open the sheet to attempt to re-link again. Is this a flaw in Excel 97, if it is, is there a fix for it

I have multiple data sheet likened to one main sheet. Each month the values are re-linked to a set of other data sheets containing the current month’s data. However, every month it can be a real exorcise in frustration trying to re-link to the new data source

I need a method of re-linking that is not as frustrating. Does anyone out there know of a solution or solutions
