Changing numbering schemes....

L

lots of questions

After following Shauna Kelly's instructions for wordproof outlines, while
still in "Styles", is there any reason to alter the settings in Paragraph
(these have been set to 0 and none before modifying the numbering. What
about tabs? (leave both alone?)

I currently have a document that I have formatted thru Styles, heading 1
thru 4 according to the above. I want to add a style that will begin a list
starting with a. as below:
1 My text
1.1 more text
1.1.1 even more text etc.
a. xxxxx,
b. xxxx etc.
1.1.2 text
a. xxx
b. xxx

I set a style for the list but when applied several pages down, instead of
'restarting' with a., b., c., etc. starts (or continues) with c., d., e.,
etc., from the prior list. When constructing the style for this list, the
submenu's from the outline do not have the same selections as the Heading
List.....how can I get the alpha list to pick up and start correctly each
time? Can I modify one of the Heading positions (like the last position) to
start the process? My thanks and best regards

It will be safer to set the indents (including the tab stops used in
numbered lists) via the Customize Outline Numbered List dialog box. In
other words, don't touch the indent settings in the Paragraph dialog
box. However, you should be able to modify (say) the line spacing of a
numbered paragraph via the Paragraph properties.

If your a,b,c,... style should restart after Heading 3, it must be
part of the same numbering scheme. In other words, via the Modify
Style dialog box for Heading 1 (as Shauna explains at
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html),
change the fourth level to the "a, b, c, ..." format and link to it
the style you are using for those paragraphs. (You may have to press
the More button to see all options in the dialog box.) Make sure that
you are restarting numbering after level three.
