Chapter numbers Word 2007

B

Bernard Liengme

I have a style called Title in a Word 2007 document. I would like to
associate this with chapter numbers. So that each time I use the Title
style, the chapter number is updated. I do not want page numbers to include
chapter numbers. But I do want figure captions to the numbers as 1.1, 1.2
..... 2.1 etc.
Many thanks for your help

For what you want to do, you cannot use the Title style. You will need to
use one of Word's built-in heading styles, Heading 1 if you're not using it
for anything else. See
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html wrt applying
numbering to the style. Once you have numbering applied to Heading 1, you
can select it as the referenced style for "Include chapter number" in the
Caption dialog.

Thanks, Suzanne
I guess I will need to modify Heading 1 to give me the nice line that Title
has.
Any recommendations for a book on Word 2007 for author of technical books?

Not on Word 2007, no, though there doubtless are Word 2007 books that would
address the issues you're interested in. One shortcut for you: with a Title
style paragraph selected and the Styles and Formatting task pane displayed,
click the arrow beside Heading 1 and choose Update to Match Selection, which
will copy the Title formatting to the Heading 1 style.
