Two questions. Sometimes when I import quoted material,
the apparent quote marks print as @ or A instead of " "?

Is there a way to find out what the underlying characters
are, to search and replace?

Also, is there a way to set an edit/zoom setting to 110
percent as the constant default setting? thanks

Make sure that your keyboard language setting (Control Panel) is set to your
default language and that in Word under Tools, Language the default is also
set to your language. What you are seeing is one of the basic difference
between a US keyboard and a UK keyboard where (amongst a few other keys
difference) the @ symbol and " symbol are switched between Shift+2 and the
shift+' keys.

HI, I checked and both are set for US English?
That does not seem to be the problem? Are there two kinds
of quote mark symbols?

Yes, some are straight like " " and some are curved like “ â€. I think the
curved ones are called "smart quotes". My autocorrect is marked to replace
straight quotes with smart quotes.

OK< but how do you find the underlying numerical codes
(0,1) for these various characters? Does Word list the
codes somewhere, like for foreign characters and quote
marks? thanks.

This often happens when the document has been converted from WordPerfect,
the quotes are from the WP Typographic Symbols fonts, and that font is not
installed. Often if you just copy/paste the characters into Find and Replace
(using Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V), the correct characters will be searched for.
