Check boxes making me crazy!

I have added check boxes to a checklist I have created,
but I can't get them to check. I can double click them
and go to option and check it there, but I just want to
be able to click on the box and check or uncheck it. It
is a regular document,not a template. How do I activate
the check box feature???
