Hi, Jay,
First make sure you can see a checkbox by going to menu,
view>toolbars> select either formatting or control box
(they give you two different types of controls)
then simply click on the checkbox, go to your location
and click'ndrag to size it. YOu can then right click
on it to set properties, assign a macro, etc.
