Checkboxes in Microsoft Word

How do I make checkboxes that users click once for the check to appear? The
only options I know are to right click and click on the "checked" button
option.

Treat the document as a form and use checkbox formfields.

There are a number of ways to create and use clickable checkboxes in
documents / templates. Some require protected or locked forms, others do
not. Take a look at the Checkbox template available at

of these.
