Checking projects back into the server

Robert

I have a number of PMs on MS Project Server who access
the system via wireless. Unfortunately, one of the
downsides of wireless is that it is fairly common for the
connection to be dropped at random. Whenever this
happens, the PM is left with a project that shows
as "checked out" and the administrator has to manually
check it back in before the PM can re-open the project.

Is there any way to allow a user to check-in their own
projects without making them an admin of the server?

Robert:

This feature has been added to 2003; however you'd need to custom something
up to add it in 2002.

Gary,

I have seen this too.
I suggested that the user take the project offline to work on it. Can you
think of any CONS to this method?
So far I have not heard of any more complaints.....

It's an excellent strategy.

Here is an idea if a lot of modifications are made to the file, it will
save time than redoing the modifications again )

1.Check in the 'checked - out ' project to the server from The Admin page of
the PWA
2. Save the modified project file to the server under another version than
'published'
3.Save the both versions of the project as offline
4.in your drive swap the names of files
5.Save the projects online again

It is not what you mean I know but keep it in mind

I have a couple questions;

Once you check the offline project in....how do you open it again once
connecting to the server.
I get an accurate error that tells me to open the project from the server
and save it OFFLINE...

Project Server has an automated process to its activities...One of the main
advantages to saving a project OFFLINE is that other resources can see that
the project is locked and try to make changes contrary to the Project
Manager who owns the project.

Can you list each step in more detail?

Hi Dale,

Thanks for the link.
That is a vanilla OFFLINE procedure document and very helpful.
However, once the plan is saved offline and the ADMIN checks it
back-in....the same plan shows up as checked in. Rightfully so!

According to DD.... I was looking for more clarification as to how his
method was executed. Specifically how the file was saved to the server under
another version other than published.

I think I see the logic. If you snapshot the project under a different
version and save both off line and make sure you do not check-in the one you
wish to come back online with it will work.
